What a busy holiday season I had. A busy holiday season means brand new fabrics. I thought I'd show off some of what I have purchased recently. I have much more available than this. We'd be here all day if I showed everything I have right now.

Can you believe it is already Thanksgiving time again? Goodness where did 2011 go? Didn't we just have the New Year? Well, it is that time again. Time to eat tons of food and most particularly delicious carbs. Stuffing is by far my favorite and yes I would like gravy on that.
Of course, in grand American tradition after eating way too much what do we do? Shop. Honestly, who wants to wake up at 4am to go shopping? Not me. Lately, I have been sewing up a storm. Mostly because that holiday shopping season is approaching and I want to have lots of ready made items to ship. There are days I wish had more hours in the day so I could get more things done. This week I made a bunch of wool iPad 2 sleeves. I must say I am pretty proud of them. For one thing I did a great job of matching the plaids. You can find them both on my own website and in my etsy shop.

How to put your ereader or iPad in a book style cover

This how to article is for my buyers who have purchased a book style cover from me. Remember these covers are snug as we don't want the device to fall out so it is important that you ordered the correct cover for your device. The other thing is is that my covers are made to be used on their own. The fit may not work if you have any other hard case or skin on the device already.

Step one: I find that is is easiest to place the device into the two interior corners first. As you can see the next two corners are under the device and look difficult to impossible to put into place. Trust me they are not but at first it may seem awkward.

Step two: Take one of the unused corners and with your fingers tug the top triangle shape piece of fabric back. This might cause the corner of the cover to bend back; this is alright as I use a flexible interlining materials. You may have to use some force on it. Do not worry these corners have reinforced stitching.

Step three: you are going to repeat step two on the last corner. Sometimes this final corner can be a bit awkward because it will be the tightest. Think brand new fitted sheets on a bed. Just stay calm. Sometimes, I find it helpful to place the device and cover on a table and then while pulling the fabric back, using the body of the device and my fingers or fingernail to kind of push the fabric along and over that last device corner. The image below shows me doing that.

Step four: you should now have the device in the cover. yay! Practice this a few times and you will be able to take your iPad or ereader in and out of the cover with ease. If there is puckering of the fabric at the corners don't worry. It should eventually relax and smooth out. Sometimes, this occurs when the fabric was cut on the bias which has a bit more stretch than the straight of grain.

Coffeecake - a start of autumn treat

The Autumn season has started at least in name. In many areas the weather is starting to get that crisp fall edge to it. The leaves are turning color and starting to fall from the trees. I don't know about you but for me that signals that start of craving more robust homey type foods like roasts, casseroles, soups, stews, things baked with apples and pumpkin. For the last couple of days I have really been wanting coffeecake.

That was what I made this morning. There are lots of recipes for coffeecakes. Recently I found this one on the King Arthur Flour website for their Cinnamon-Streusel Coffeecake. It is soft and dense with a center layer of brown sugar, cinnamon, and cocoa powder (for color it doesn't add flavor). Then there is of course the usual cinnamon sugar topping. The recipe makes a big 9X13 coffeecake which is a bigger amount than I ever need to make. So this time I halved the recipe. The other change I'd make, in the future, is to add more butter to the streusel topping because I thought it was a bit dry.

Recipe: Cinnamon-Streusel Coffeecake
By: King Arthur Flour (original 9X13 inch recipe)

Joanna's half the recipe changes

Streusel Topping
1/2 cup plus 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
3/4 cup all purpose flour
1/2 tablespoon ground cinnamon
3 plus tablespoons melted salted butter (I think I'd prefer a bit more butter than the 3 TBS next time)

Mix flour, sugar, and cinnamon, Add the melted butter and use a fork to work the mixture into a crumbly mix, set aside.

Filling
1/2 cup brown sugar
1/2 Tablespoon ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon unsweetened baking cocoa (this is for color and wont add flavor)

Mix all ingredient in a bowl and set aside.

Batter
6 Tablespoons softened salted butter
1/2 teaspoon salt
3/4 cup granulated sugar
2 1/2 Tablespoons brown sugar
1 1/4 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon vanilla
2 large eggs
1/4 cup plus about 2 tablespoons sour cream
1/2 cup plus 2 tablespoons milk
1 3/4 cup plus 2 table spoons all purpose flour

Preheat oven to 350. Grease pan. you can use a 9 inch cake pan or because I worry that this is a lot of dough I use an oval pan that has deeper sides than most cake pans.
Cream together the butter, salt and sugars. Mix in the baking powder and vanilla. Add each egg one at a time mixing to combine after each on. Mix in the sour cream. Now add 1/3 of the flour and mix until just combined, add a 1/3 of the milk and mix until combines, repeat adding the rest of the flour and milk in roughly 1/3 increments until combined.
Add half the batter to your prepared pan. Sprinkle with the filling mixture. I ended up not using all of mine. Top with the rest of the batter. you can take a knife and swirl through the batter and filling mix to swirl it if you like. Top with the streusel topping.
Bake in preheated oven for 50 to 55 minutes or until edges are golden and toothpick comes out clean.
Let cool at least 20 minutes and serve. Goes great with coffee.

How to: Pattern Weights

I use pattern weights for holding my pattern pieces in place. Paper pieces can become quickly worn if pinned into too many times. Some times I actually used template plastic to create pattern pieces on and you can't pin through that. I had a nice set of commercially made pattern weights but the drawback to these is that if you drop them one too many times the seam, in them, can open up allowing the tiny little pellets to come out and make a mess. As you see, below, I have taped one of mine back together. I decided to try my hand at making covers for them. You can make these as fancy as you like or as simple and easy as you like.

For one weight cover:

** 2 pieces of fabric scraps at least 5" square (I used 100% cotton quilting weight fabric)
** cotton batting or other low loft quilting batting
** pattern weight (if you don't have any buy two 2" diameter washers at the hardware store)
** thread to match or an accent thread would be cool
** sewing machine or you could hand sew them if you are so inclined

If you are using washers you will want to take them and stack them on top of each other. It takes 2 washers per pattern weight. Take a bit of batting and fill the center hole. Wrap them in tape. I found that strapping style shipping tape worked well for this.

Cut that fabric into 2 circles roughly 4" in diameter. Cut 2 circles of batting the same size. Place your fabric right sides together with a piece of batting on the wrong side of each. so it is stacked: batting, fabric, fabric, batting. Sew around the circle making sure to leave a gap big enough to fit your pattern weight or washers into. The seam allowance for this is about 1/4".

Clip into the seam allowance around the seam of the circle but don't cut the stitches. Turn right side out and iron neatly making sure to tuck the seam opening in. It's easier to do this now than when you have the weight inside. Insert the weight and stitch the seam opening closed. I'm not one for hand stitching so I used either a straight stitch of a zig zag stitch all the way around. If you can't stitch all the way around make sure to at least stitch the seam opening closed.

You could even embellish your pattern weights with buttons and other things. Please feel free to use these instructions as you like.

Project: Singer Featherweight

Here is the story. This Singer 221 Featherweight came into my life in the last week. My mom gave it to me and she bought it at a garage sale for a very good price. It would be silly to turn down a free machine.

so here is the machine and you are probably looking at it thinking what's wrong with it. Machine-wise is it in great condition. It just needs a new bobbin case carrier as it's current one is missing an important element. It runs and the needle moves and it's working. Now if you are looking at it you can see that the decals are well missing in places. The finish on the machine is pretty much gone and the black paint below is rough, chipping, and in general sad condition. My goal is to take the machine apart and repaint it.

Now you are probably thinking can you repaint them? Aren't they old and rare? The singer 221 is not a rare machine. Old yes but there are lots out there and so repainting it is not going to decrease the value any because it's current finish is bad. I wouldn't even think of repainting had it's finish been in excellent condition. Yes, you can repaint them. You can pay to have it repainted which can set you back between $300 and $500 or you can do it yourself for under $100 probably even under $50 and just put in time.

One of the things I learned is that automotive paint is the best choice. When I was working on the restoration of my 1971 VW bug, back in the later 1990's, I found out that you could get auto paint mixed into spray paint cans for touch up work. So that is what I am going to get. It will cost more than a regular can of spray paint but you get many more color choices. Plus it is base coat/clear coat application. I haven't decided on the color. So many choices. I will after I pay a visit to the auto paint store in town.

Today, I have taken the pics you see of the machine in it's current condition. I have also made a list of all the parts that I need to replace like decals, the rubber feet for the bottom, the felt pad of the pan, the bobbin case carrier. This is a good time to take stock of any parts you will need and get them order. Might as well only tear it apart once. If you are thinking of starting this type of project I would highly suggest that you do the same.

Which of course brings me to books and manuals. If you are interested in doing your own servicing, repair, and heck repainting of your singer featherweight you must get David McCallum's book "The Featherweight 221 and I" which you can get on his website www.featherweight221.com along with some common parts and things needed for servicing your machine. The book is very well written and will walk you through step by step on maintaining your machine. Things learned it it can be applied to other vintage sewing machines.

In the coming weeks you will see me take this machine apart enough for painting. I am actually planing on building a temporary paint booth in my garage so I can get a nice clean finish to my paint and I really want to do a nice job with this. In many ways it reminds me of vintage car restoration only not as costly.

Revive the blog from the dead?

Yep, somehow I will revive this blog and well actually make it better. The hard part is finding anything I want to blog about. Some people know already what it is they want to show the world. Me? I haven't a clue so I sit here and do a bit of this and a bit of that and none of it has really clicked for me yet. I know it will soon.
Part of reviving it is having a new banner which I quickly made myself and even took the picture myself as well. I collect vintage cameras rather they work or not. This one is non working and I think I got it at a thrift store for only a few dollars.

New Fabrics!

I went to the sewing expo today. Now I am a master shopper at this event. I have a couple of booths i visit and that it it. there is no wild wandering and spending for me. I like to say I am a discriminating shopper. :)

Plaid wools from Pendleton Woolen Mill. I am actually going to get more here in a few weeks because I am planning a trip to Portland, OR and they have store there that carries all the yardage fabrics and things like blanket headers and such.

Traditional Yukata fabrics for Kimonos they are only 14" wide.
these are 100% cotton from Kasuri Dyeworks.

Now I have to figure out what exactly I will make with these. bags obviously but what type.....

Tarotscopes Feb 20 - 27th

This weeks picture isn't mysterious or tarot related. My favorite flowers are the cheery gerbera daisies. Some people like roses and roses are beautiful but there is something sweet about the daisy. How To Tuesday - Simple Tied Headband

I am hoping to write a how to articles on Tuesdays. It probably wont be every week but I am setting the goal of at least once or twice a month to present to you a how to project.

This week is a simple tied headband.
You will need a few supplies and some basic sewing skills. I'd say that this entire project took me less than 15 minutes total.

**Fabric strips you will need two pieces at least 45" long but the width is your choice. you can either have a print and a solid like I have used or you can use two different coordinating prints. You can choose cottons, which are easier to work with, or you can use a fashion type of fabric. I'd probably make sure that one of the fabrics was a 100% cotton though.
**Thread to match
**Pins
**Ruler
**scissors or olfa cutter and mat
**sewing machine or you could hand sew this if you are so inclined and skilled
optional a pencil or chalk for marking

step 1: you will need to figure out how wide you want your band to be. I wanted a fairly wide band that finished at around 3". Mine has finished at 3 1/4". I cut my fabric at 4". a good rule of thumb is to consider your seams will be about 1/4" and that is for each seam so with two side seams you will need to add 1/2" to what you want your finished width to be.
Now this is a longer simple tying headband so I wanted plenty in the length. I left it at the width the fabric is on the bolt, which is for most bolts of cotton quilting fabric 45".

step 2: you will now cut your pieces to the width you need them to be. Use sharp scissors or a clear ruler like Omnigrid and an olfa cutter and mat. If using scissors you may want to mark your fabric with pencil or fabric chalk so you can cut on a straight line.

Step 3: place the right sides of the fabric facing each other. You may want to pin your pieces together. Make sure you leave a several inch gap on one of the long sides because you will need this opening for turning out your headband. a gap or 3" or 4" is sufficient. Don't worry we will close this gap later.

Step 4: Sew all the way around your pieces except for the few inch gap that I talked about in step 3. You will want at least a 1/4" seam along all sides. I made mine a bit bigger as my main fabric was a slightly stretchy fashion type fabric.

step 5: This is an optional step but I wanted to add a bit of something to the ends of mine so I decided to give an angle to those edges. I used my ruler to make sure I started at the same measurement up and then I used chalk to mark a sewing line that ran from that measurement up down to the corner. Just sew along this line and trim away the excess fabric leaving 1/4" allowance

step 6: to make crisp corners you will want to clip the corners of you pieces. Make sure you don't nick the seams but you can cut close to where they meet in the corners

step 7: turn your piece right side out through the gap left in your sewing. Pay careful attention to your corners; if they seem too rounded you can use a point turner or even a sharpened pencil to help your corners seem more clearly defined.

step 8: use a steam iron to press your headband and make those edges look neat. Make sure to tuck in the fabric at the open gap inside the same amount as your seams because next we will add a bit of accent top stitching and will close that opening.

step 9: you can use a straight stitch as I have done or if your machine has some fancy stitches you can use one of those. We are just going to top stitch around all 4 sides This will help your headband look neat and crisp but will close that opening we left because you want this set of stitches to be close to the edge.

Now you should be done with your simple headband.

Tarotscopes Jan 24 - 30

I'm in the mood to try these again. They're kind of fun in a relaxed sort of way. I have been feeling a bit retro this week so I used the Housewives Tarot for this week's draw. It's quite the fun deck and they even did the packaging to match. The theme is 1950's retro kitsch. The cards come in a recipe box complete with recipes and the little book with it is actually very funny and not bland like LWBs (little white books) usually are.Learn more about it here.

You may find yourself slacking this week on you chores. Quit putting stuff off and just get it done already the sense of accomplishment will be worth it.

My dog is needs therapy

issue: obsessive need to keep toys "safe"

I have come to the conclusion that my dog is probably insane or suffers from some form of canine OCD. He loves his toys and like a child loves to be surrounded by them. Although he doesn't play with them all that much unless you count trying to chew eyeballs of them as playing. What he does do is spend his time insuring their safety.
The first rule seems to be that toys do not belong outside....ever. Whenever I have had a visiting greyhound or other dog in my home that has packed a toy outside; Spanky has gotten visibly upset. He will follow the other dog and wait for them to drop the toy so he may of course bring it back inside.
Rule two is a little odd. If the home has two stories; all toys belong on the second floor no exceptions. He will spend countless hours collecting the toys and taking them upstairs where they belong. This happens in his home as well as the homes of other dogs.
I have managed to keep the toy allotment to a minimum in my office by keeping them in a basket next to the sofa. for whatever reason he will not take them from the basket. If I put one on the floor. There he is moments later, rescuing it and taking it to a safe zone. I guess it could be worse he could be bugging me to play fetch all day. Good thing he doesn't know how that game is played.

Feeling Girly

I am 30 years old...almost 31 and for the first time in my life since as long as I can remember I have long hair. As a kid my hair was always in a bob style hair cut about chin length. A few times it was even shorter. As I got older and through my teen years it was rarely past my shoulders. It's been every color of the rainbow but just not long until now. I love the red color it is now. I know this will sound strange coming from someone who had magenta hair but I was nervous to go red.
Okay, so back to the topic; my hair is currently past my shoulders now. I have been growing it out since 2008 when I had a short spiked pixie like haircut. I don't know what to do with it though at this length. I don't care for braids or for ponytails. I was thinking I should make myself some headbands and other small hair accessories. Perhaps, it can be a bit of a blog challenge for me.

choice can be a great motivator and probably my worst enemy. I have all these new plans and ideas swirling around in my brain on what it is I want to do. Now that I am faced with actually setting them in motion it's almost too overwhelming to get started.
I know that the most logical thing is to figure out what I can do first and what needs to be done first. Then go from there. Logical isn't always what I want to do. Thus I torture myself with possibilities. Maybe this is all my Tuesday night angst filled rambling going on. The tortured soul of the creative. oh woe is me....

The future is now!

Here it is 2011 already. I sit back and ask how did we fly through 2010 so fast. This is also a time in which I make new plans and goals for the new year.
One of my goals is to spend time on my business getting it more focused and directed. I've kind of been letting my focus and artistic choices wander all over the place and I really need to bring it back in. A few months ago I had thought of and even announced giving up jewelry making. Now, I want to come back to it with trying steampunk jewelry. What funny is years ago I started collecting watches and gears before it was even a trend. The whole idea of working on steampunk jewelry as given me the idea of incorporating more of those style choices into my bags.
There will be lots of changes and then again some things will stay the same. My quality of workmanship and great customer service will still be here. The worst part about this is having my shop go through what I consider an awkward phase. I wish it was more instant instead of a growing process.

So begins the holiday shopping rush at least in the US. The insanity, the craziness, the why didn't I buy that sweater 6 weeks ago when it was actually in the store! For many years I sold my handmade stuff at a local art show that happened on this weekend. It was actually one of the better organized shows I have been a vendor at.

The UFO

The UFO....no, not that kind. The UnFinished Object kind. I don't know about you but I have some many craft projects stacked up waiting to be finished. I have a jacket that i started sewing several years ago. it's a pretty plum wool. I just need to sew the lining and put it in. Then there is the sweater I am making for my mom. It was supposed to be for last Xmas. Luckily, she is a clam and patient woman. I can say all i have left to do for the sweater is finished knitting the wide collar for it. 100 and some odd stitched in a knit 1, purl 1 ribbing. I also have some socks, fingerless, gloves, and a hat to knit for myself. Only the socks were kind of started.
Then to make things worse. I easily have a half dozen pendants that need to be finished so I can sell them.
Each of these items will make me feel very proud when I finish them and yet....I haven't. Does anyone have tips on how to pick up forgotten craft projects to get them done and finished and no longer haunting me from their storage boxes or bags?

Nutella Thumbprint Cookies

I love Nutella...food of the gods really. so for those of you who are tired of eating nutella the usual way, off a spoon right from the container, I present to you this recipe I created. Made using a simple butter cookie recipe I added chopped toasted hazelnuts, mini chocolate chips and yes centers of nutella spread.

Nutella Thumbprint Cookies
makes about 3 dozen

3/4 pound (3 sticks) unsalted butter softened
1 cup granulated sugar
1 tsp vanilla extract
3 - 1/2 cups all purpose flour
1/4 tsp salt
1/3 cup mini chocolate chips
1/3 cup finely chopped toasted hazelnuts
Nutella

In a larg bowl cream together the butter and sugar until combined, add the vanilla and mix well. add the flour and salt and mix until the dough starts to come together. This is a very thick dough like a shortbread cookie dough. Add the chocolate chips and hazelnuts. I sort of managed to stir them through out by very gently mixing the dough pieces. Take the dough and form it into a flat disc. this is when you can make sure the chocolate chips and nuts get in there nicely. Wrap with plastic wrap and chill in the fridge for at least 30 minutes.
Preheat over to 350 degrees F.
Unwrap chilled dough and form into balls roughly 1 1/4 inch round. Place on ungreased cookie sheet and gently press a indentation into the center. Nutella doesn't really come out of a measuring sppon very well so I used a butter knife to place about 1/4 teaspoon of nutella spread in the center of each cookie. Bake cookies for 20-25 minutes or until lightly golden around the edges. Let cool on cookie sheet for a few minutes and then transfer to cooling rack. Enjoy!

30 Day Shred Challenge

So in theory by now I should be done. Notice I said in theory. Yeah, that is a big clue there. The last couple of weeks have been hard to make the time, make the effort. It all started with a heatwave. temps were in the 90's and I don't have AC. Sadly, I am not a get up at 4am type of person. It's been extremely difficult to get back into the routine. I have gotten a few days in here and there but not what I'd like it it be. I didn't even get my usual walk outside done either. I am rather disappointed in myself a bit.
On the bright side I did start in again. I decided because of the time off some time back at level 1 might be a good plan.

It was another week of sticking to my exercise regime. It went in some ways better and in some ways it was harder. I think my endurance and strength is vastly improving. At the beginning of the week I had some knee pain and stiffness but I continued on because it wasn't crippling or extremely painful. By the middle of the week it quit hurting. It's a lot of jumps and lunges which I wasn't used to doing. There were a few days in which I didn't feel like doing it at all but I did it anyway and felt so much better and dare I say it proud of myself for sticking with it.
Probably what you may be wondering is have I lost weight. I cannot say for sure if the scale will show a change but I can say that I feel like my jeans fit better.

On my walk

Okay so not everyone lives in a nice area so you may have to go find a quiet neighborhood to go for a walk in or a park. In any case get outside, get some fresh air and see some pretty things. I took pictures yesterday of some flowers in my neighbors front yard and I did in fact see a deer. I managed to get a picture of it. I think this is one of the in town deer that live here. You can't hunt in the city limits and there are plenty of sheltered forest like areas in which they can safely hide out. In fact last summer they had to relocated a mother bear and her cub from the area because they were raiding trash cans in a near by park.
So get out there and have some fun. what are you doing still sitting at your computer?!

Week 1 Done!

So last Monday I started the dreaded and much talked about 30 Day Shred workout. Jillian Michaels from Biggest Loser is the fitness instructor on the video. She is tough but in a weird way she keeps me motivated to keep going.
I have attempted this before but this is a longest time frame I have done this for so far and I have no intentions on quitting this time.
Monday-Friday last week I did level 1 which I had done before. I found on this umpteenth time around that is hasn't been as difficult or dare I say it as painful the day after. By Saturday i was feeling pretty challenged and decided to do what i first set out as doing just a few parts of level 2. I ended up doing the entire level 2 program! I was certainly proud of myself. I had read some online reviews that said that level 2 was so hard and difficult. Perhaps I built up the level of difficulty in my head so then the reality of it was that it wasn't too bad. I do admit I have to take a couple 5 second breaks in there for a few exercises. I follow the lower impact modifications that Anita does for some of the elements.
Sunday was my day of rest from exercise and boy did I need it. Along with the 30 Day Shred I have been keeping up with my regular walking in my neighborhood which is about 2 almost 3 miles some of it hills. Plus I walk my dog every day and sometimes I sneak in another 30 minutes of cardio in in the evenings.
I am feeling so much better not only fitness wise do I feel strong but in other aspects of my life I just feel better. It is true what they say that exercise and regualr fitness can improve your mood, help you get sleep, and just in general make you feel better.
Stay tuned because I plan on taking my camera out on one of my daily walks in the neighborhood and take some pictures. Maybe I will be lucky and there will be some deer wandering around.

30 Day Shred - or am I insane?

I am taking the challenge to do Jillian Michaels' 30 Day Shred work out. If you haven't heard of it, which there are people who haven't, it consists of 3 levels of circuit training workout. Each are about 20 minutes in length. You do 3 minutes strength, 2 minutes cardio, and 1 minute abs and then repeat. I've attempted this before but I figured if I publicly stated I was going to do this then maybe it would work out better for me and I wouldn't stop on day 5.
Some people do the program for 30 days straight 10 days for each level. I plan on doing it a bit differently; moving up in levels as I feel ready to. Hopefully every 10-14 days or so. I plan on taking a day or so off each week to rest. Plus I plan on continuing my daily 2 to 3 mile walks.
Monday was day one and I took both measurements and pictures. Nope, I am not posting them for you. I'm not brave to post my not so good looking wearing next to nothing pictures online. I might post some type of before and after pics, the pounds and the measurements of how many inches I lost. I don't have any sort of expectation and I just want to get healthier and look more toned.
Wish me luck and I hope I don't die. lol

I thought I would share with you this great cookie recipe that I got from my aunt; who got it from one of the women in her quilting group. It's a great use for an over ripe banana and you could in theory make these sort of healthy by adding dried fruits and healthy nuts. I didn't say I made them healthy though I just said you could.

Breakfast Cookies

Mix together
1 Cup peanut butter
2 sticks (1 cup) butter/margarine (I use butter...)
1 cup granulated sugar
1 cup packed brown sugar (I have use both light and dark and it doesn't matter)
1 large banana
1 egg
1 teaspoon vanilla extract

stir in
2 1/2 cups quick cook oatmeal
1 1/4 cups all purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon salt

add:
okay so this is when you can get creative because you can add what you like and in any amount you like. I used for this batch some coconut, chopped peanuts, some mini chocolate chips, and some butterscotch chips. You could be healthy by using dried fruits (chopping them if needed), various other nuts, or even candied fruits. really you can use anything as long as you can chop it into small bits.

preheat oven to 350 degrees. Place on to ungreased cookie sheet by small tablespoon. Bake 10-12 minutes. Enjoy!

Getting out and about

After days and days of dark grey skies, rain, cold winds, and hail storms; I woke up to a pretty somewhat sunny Sunday. I decided that I was just sick and tired and annoyed with being cooped up in the house. A walk in the park or through the neighborhood didn't seem adventurous enough. I decided to drive to the ocean and visit Grayland and Westport.

The first stop was in Grayland where I found my past favorite stretch of beach had eroded further this past winter. It's almost inaccessible now and in fact the road stops a good 200 yards from where it used to.

Then I continued on to Westport which had the best surprise. The tall ships; Lady Washington and Hawaiian Chieftain were currently docked. In fact they later sailed out to have a mock battle on the ocean. No, I didn't go on the sail. It was a great chance to take photographs of both ships while docked and then I managed to get a picture of them sailing.
I even had lunch in Westport and if you are ever there I highly suggest the One Eyed Crab. it's across the street from the marina. It was a bit pricey but the portions are large so they could be split.

After lunch I visited the lighthouse. I didn't pay to climb the stairs but I did take some pics of the outside. Then I decided that that was enough for the day so I headed back home. I couldn't resist pulling over and taking a picture of some fence that I saw with all these buoys hanging on it.

What did this trip accomplish well it certainly brightened my mood which I hope will help me this week in being productive and getting things done. Just getting out in the fresh air was a huge benefit. I am hoping to get back to work in the studio and in the sewing room with some new energy.

Sometimes I just get into the mood to do domestic type things like bake or cook and on a few occasions even clean. Today was not about the cleaning or the dusting. I've actually been doing that. I was in the mood this afternoon to bake. What to bake I wondered? Bread, of course.

Ingredients

* 4 teaspoons active dry yeast
* 1/3 cup sugar
* 1 cup warm water (about 110 degrees)
* 6 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
* 3 eggs
* 3 1/2 to 4 1/2 cups flour
* 1 tablespoon salt

Directions

Place the yeast, sugar and warm water in a mixing bowl. Stir and let stand for about 10 minutes, until creamy and foamy. Add the melted butter and eggs and mix well.Combine the flour with the salt. Add it to the yeast mixture, 1 or 2 cups at a time, until it forms a soft dough. Place the dough on a well-floured board and knead until the dough becomes smooth and elastic, about 5 minutes. Place the dough in a large, well-greased bowl, then flip the dough over to coat with oil. Cover with plastic wrap or a towel and let stand in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.

Preheat the oven to 375 degrees. Punch the dough down, form it into a loaf and place in a greased loaf pan. Bake for about 1 hour, or until the bread is golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped. Let cool before slicing.

I did read the reviews and made some adjustments to the recipe posted above.
Big adjustment don't bother with a loaf pan this dough wont fit. Just do a free form braid on a heavy sheet pan. The other adjustment mine did not need to bake for an hour about 45 minutes at 375 was fine. I found that my bread got brown right away so I covered it after the first 15 minutes of baking with foil. The I added a bit of butter to the top of my bread for the last 5-10 minutes of baking.

No, I didn't die or see the light.
okay so as you may or may not remember I had this grand scheme to make my own Alive In Wonderland hoodie. I had to procure the main part of my project a new black hooded sweatshirt. Easy enough except all the stores are switching to spring summer clothes so the selection was limited. I would order online but I have been losing weight in recent month and so I don't know what size would fit best. So I did find some at a local store but no black ones. There was grey and I thought to myself it is a cotton poly blend I could dye this black and it will be fine.
flaw one: cotton poly blends dye lighter than the package so what I ended up with was a very dark green tinged blackish garment.
flaw two: I didn't know that thread was 100% poly so I had nice light grey stitching everywhere...not the accent I was going for
flaw three: I used a large bowl but not large enough to fully agitate the hooide so my dye was uneven even if it had worked out.

so this leaves me where you may ask. Well, I am still on the search for the perfect already made one and my project is on hold till I can find a great fitting black hoodie. Is it seriously too much to ask for a fully zipped front hoodie in size small in black. apparently it is.
although I am looking on ebay. I love it people are selling the hooded sweatshirts from hot topic on there for over a $100. looks like not to many buyers at that price. some people are buying them for $5 or more over the hot topic pricing.

so you are probably sitting there going is there a point to this posting? yes, there is. In case you haven't figured it out I am a fan of Alice in Wonderland. With the new Tim Burton movie due to be released this year; Alice is back in popularity. I find myself in the need of a new hoodie but alas I am a picky girl. I have to have a zipper. I like both front and back designs. It's such a waste to only have a front design. As much as I love the work of Tim Burton; I honestly don't want a Alice hoodie from that movie nor do i want a Disney version on either. So to the interwebs I went to search. After an hour I gave up. Nothing was to my liking. This bring us to the real point of this post; I am going to make a series of postings about designing and making my very own hooded sweater shirt with an Alice theme.
Right now I have tons of excitement for this project but need to have time and also I need to get supplies including a plain hoodie. So far in my planing I will be using a combination of original book artwork, quotations, and some common symbols such as teacups and playing cards. I feel like the will be an evolving project as I design the front, back, sleeves, and even maybe the hood. I don't really have a sketch at this point it's more of ideas spinning in my brain. It's a start.

This bag is fully lined with a grey solid cotton. no pockets or closure on this shoulder bag. It has two handles made from the floral print that are about .75" wide and 21" in length. It is interlined (you cannot see this) with pellon for stiffness.

Another start...

so here it is January 6th and a few short hours from the 7th. So the big questions is do I have plans and goals for the new year? well, I'm not one for resolutions because those get broken before a week is out. Do I have goals? why yes, I do. I would like to increase my etsy sales...the goal of pretty much every etsy seller. One of my other goals was to make more new products. That I can actually say I have accomplished so far. I have made several new handbags. I need to list more jewelry items that I had actually made before the official start of the new year. Okay so maybe my plan should be to clone myself so I can get more done....it that are I become world ruler and add an extra month to the calendar in which case I am calling it Smarch.

How To: Upcycled Counter Top Samples

With only a few supplies and some time you can create these fun up-cycled plastic laminate pieces. Perfect for use as ornaments, gift tags, bookmarks, or whatever.

Supplies

Plastic Laminate counter top sample (aka Formica): you can get these at any home improvement store. They come in a couple of sizes but you may have to take what you can get. Only select a reasonable amount as the store is hoping to sell counter tops not give away crafting supplies. Remove any stickers from the back. You can purchase remnants or if you are having new PL counter installed in your home ask the installer for the remaining pieces from your sheets. then just cut them into sizes you would like.

Gel Medium: comes in a variety of finishes and is found in the fine art supplies section of most hobby/craft stores. I use Golden but you can use whatever brand you can find.

Papers: scrap booking paper, wrapping paper, pages from old books, paper of any type or kind. You could even use fabric if you wanted.

Images: you can use print outs of digital collage imagery which you can find on etsy or from Artchix Studio, photo copies of old book pages, old family photos (use photo copies), or you can use rubber stamps and ink.

Extras: scissors, exacto knife, paint brush (small craft type), craft glue, and ribbon/cording

Optional extras: glitter, paints, inks, color pencils, buttons, the ideas are endless.

Step 1: Select a paper for your background. On the back of the paper coat an area larger than your sample of plastic laminate with the gel medium. You want a nice even costing that is not too thick or too thin. You will take you sample the place it so that the brown backing material is the part that touches the gel medium. So the front will be facing you and it now what will be the backside of your project. Make sure the the paper is flat and no air bubble are trapped. Allow this to dry fully.
Step 2: Your piece should now be dry. Use the exacto knife to cut around the edge of the sample; freeing your piece from the background paper. If working with kids this is where an adult will need to do the work. Use a hole punch to punch out the hole at the top if you like.
Step 3: Now this is where you can get fun and creative. Using other papers, images, rubber stamps and ink you will design the front of your piece. Have fun and use your own imagination. If you are using layers of paper use the gel medium again to attach them like glue. I usually put the gel medium on the backside of the piece I am adding. Again allow to dry before adding another layer. This is also when you may wish to add things like glitter.
Step 4: After your piece has dried it must be fully coated on the front with the gel medium. It is better to do two or three thinner coats than 1 thick one. Allow the piece to dry fully in between. This will give it a nice finish and insure that all your pieces stay put.
Step 5: Now you can put ribbon or cording through the top hole to create an ornament or longer for a book mark and you are Done. Or if you want you can use a strong clear drying crafting glue or hot glue to attach things like buttons, ribbon, trim, feathers, and so on.
NOTE: I have found that these do not do well being exposed to heat. Anything you want to add that is going to require the use of an oven or heat gun you may want to reconsider. I find that heat such as that causes the oils in the plastic laminate to come out and make the paper look like a greasy fast food bag.
I hope these simple instructions have given you enough info that you can go out and make some of your own.

The Silence is Deafening

I don't know about anyone else but I can't create without some sort of sound in the room. Rather it's music, TV or a movie I need something to watch or listen to while working.
I have been this way since I was a kid. I could never do homework in a quiet room. It keeps my mind busy but focused which probably sounds weird when I say it. Yet, it make sense to me.
Sometimes the music of the show that I am watching reflects what I am working on and sometimes not at all but rather reflects my mood. Lately, I have been creating new things while watching season of Buffy the Vampire Slayer on dvd. It's been really fun and making the time move by at a much more enjoyable pace. I think i would go bonkers if I didn't have that distraction right now.
What do you find inspiring to create to? What do you like to use as a distraction while creating your art to make the more monotonous tasks go by quicker? Feel free to share because I am always look for new ideas.

I made about 7/8" diameter sterling silver circles out of 14 gauge wire. After they were soldered I hand hammered them so they would have some texture. I then wire wrapped using more sterling silver wire an 8mm round Prehnite beads and 9mm by 6mm faceted Amethyst beads. They hang on solid sterling silver ear wires. Total length is about 1 3/4".

Make the best of my vintage button..err not really a collection more of a this would be cool to use not so bright idea taking them kind of thing.

The old lady that I used to live next to worked for one of the big fabric chains up here and she would take home the display cards when they were no longer needed. This was back in the day when stores would have these fancy displays for buttons. Anywoo...not really my point here. The point is I have tons of vintage buttons that I am listing in my still new supply shop. These are just so cool and they have never been used. I am selling some on the original store displays. I figured before I even but out these bags why not give you a sneak peek at the great cottons prints that I have available. The plan is to make them all into simple and casual bags for under $30. Some colorful prints to liven on those dreary grey days of winter. I think the stripes will actually be used as lining for one of the floral and the cherry print.

More cotton bark-cloth inspired by the 1950's. I love this stuff but I haven't been able to find it anywhere and I bought this fabric over 3 years ago. It's doubtful i could find more.

So i came up with this sort of neat idea. I'm not very knowledgeable in astrology other than I know the basic signs. I figured why not take my love of tarot and peoples interest in reading their horoscope and blend the two. On Monday October 12th I will be posting my first tarotscope reading for the week. I will draw a single card for each of the signs and figure out what that card is trying to advise for you. Hopefully, this will be fun and interesting. If it works out well I will post another every Monday. I figure I will try it for a month as see how it goes. So it will help me to gauge interest on it if people can leave comments.

The Star XVII

I figured we could journey through the tarot together. Which I am hoping will help me understand the cards more. I thought, for today, I would start with my favorite card.
The Star card is my favorite of all the Major Arcana. Something about it's promise of faith and hope always makes me feel at ease. The Star offers a vision of tomorrow but it is not concrete. You still have to put in your energy and effort. It's not a fast moving card either. It is on that requires you to keep faith even if you don't see changes or help occurring. This is of course just the tip of the iceberg on meaning. The Star could mean something else entirely to you.
As you can see by the pic the Star is depicted in a variety of ways. It usually features a young woman with an urn or two; sometimes there is water in the image. Often times, several stars are depicted in the evening sky. As you know this can vary from deck to deck.
Next time we will start at the beginning with The Fool.

The Golden Tarot

I own several tarot decks but one of my favorites has to be Kat Black's Golden Tarot. Based on RWS but I personally find the imagery more engaging and I prefer the coloring. She used renaissance art as the inspritation but there is a enough RWS symbolism there that even a beginner can feel comfortable working with this deck. Plus US Games Systems went all out for this deck. It comes in a durable box with a removable lid. It does have just a LWB but rather an actually little paperback book. The cards are printed on much thicker card stock. Plus the edges are gilted. This does make for a tougher wearing in period as the thicker cards can be more difficult to shuffle. The gilting can lead to the cards sort of clumping together. After a week or so of daily use those issues go away. Click here to Purchase I have two decks new and sealed available on ebay.

It is in the cards

So one of my interests several years ago was reading tarot cards. I admit at that younger age I didn't really dedicate myself. I was 17 or so when I got my first deck. I think by the time I was 19 I had pretty much abandoned it. So here we are about 10 years later. I find myself back in line with the cards. I'm not sure what triggered my return; perhaps a better understanding of myself and my place in this world. who knows...
So for my birthday my sister surprised me by getting me a deck. It surprised me because for several years she kind of would knock anything that wasn't in line with the teachings of her church. Anyway, she gave me this deck which I think i might sell on ebay because try as I might I just can't seem to connect with it.
So I have three decks that I use most of the time: the very first deck I bought which is the Londa deck, Kat Black's Golden deck, and Deviant Moon. I just got Deviant Moon this last week. As surreal as the Deviant Moon deck is I really enjoy reading with it.
I've been taking a class at my local community college which has been great. if anything just to get out more. I've been reading for family and friends. Plus I've been doing some readings online for people. It has been just so much fun to get back into.

Over a week ago this thread was started in the etsy forums. "I'm an ARTIST not a mess maker!" This got me thinking about my own crafting area. I am an artist and mess maker! Don't let the boxes and storage things confuse you. They are there just to hide the jumbles of "things" and to make it look like I know where stuff is. About once or twice a year I get sick of it and clean and organize. Of course, after I do that I can't find anything.

Custom Pendant

This is a custom sterling silver pendant I made for my mom. I bought her the Queensland Boulder Opal years ago and had set it. I decided that both my skill level and design ability had improved since that time so I wanted to reset it. I created sterling silver pendant and setting using both fusing and soldering. Yes, she does love it.

Bracelet to Benefit Greyhound Adoption

The words "Adopt a Greyhound" are stamped on to this sterling silver bracelet. Each letter was hand stamped on to the bracelet. It was then antiqued and polished so that the wording can be seen. This is a cuff style bracelet and is a small size. My wrist is 6" and this fits very loosely. Probably 6.5" to 7" wrists would be better.

Art Purse

This one of a kind art purse it truly unique. I used a gel medium to transfer the image onto 100% cotton fabric. The image is that of a very regal and royal woman. Accented with lace and silk with edges left raw. I added a small bit of hand beading to the lace and also to image. The base of this purse is made out of a beautiful jacquard fabric. Interline with pellon (not seen) for stability. This purse is lined with black cotton. It has a small inside pocket. There is no top closure for this bag. It has a single shoulder strap that is 1.5" wide by 36" long. The purse measures 12" wide and13" tall. The image is about 6" square.

Fused Glass Pendants Tutorial

Supplies:
glass
a prepared kiln shelf
glass cutter
glass-tac or Elmers glue
a digitally controlled kiln

For this tutorial I will be discussing how to make simple glass cabochons.

Selecting your glass:Not all glass is the same. Glass has what is called a COE (coefficient of expansion) number. It is important to know the COE number if you plan on mixing brands of glass. For this tutorial and my own preferred method is to use glass all by one company. You may be asking well what happens if I mix COE numbers. Sadly, the answer is is that your items will crack and break.
Now in glass you have lots of options: sheet, stringers (think spaghetti), frit (small bits of crushed glass), powdered, and confetti. For this example I am using just sheet glass. I prefer double rolled fusible tested glass from Bullseye Glass in Portland Oregon. If you live near Portland, stop in at the resource center for fun shopping and any advice you may need. They ship worldwide.
Select your glass colors. Opaque or transparent is strictly up to you. I have used opaque in these pictures.
Prepping: You will need to prepare a kiln shelf with kiln wash or shelf primer. Follow the manufacturers directions on preparing your shelves. Never ever fire directly on your kilns floor. The kiln wash or shelf primer is like non-stick spray for your kiln shelves. If you don't use it; all your glass pieces will stick to the shelf and be a waste. There is also fiber paper which is one time use and can be used in place of kiln wash. I find a well prepared shelf will go through several firings before needing to be redone with new kiln wash.
Cutting Glass:So you have selected your glass and now you need to cut it. For these pendants I used rectangles or squares which are super simple to cut. I just use a glass cutter I bought at my local hardware store. You cannot just cut a square out of your glass. You must first cut a strip of glass whatever width you want. This strip will be as long as your sheet of glass is. Score with your glass cutter whatever the width is. I like for pendants between 1-2" for width. If you don't think you can score a straight line use a sharpie to mark your glass with. Using your glass cutter firmly score in one movement. To break simple turn over and tap along the score line. You should now have a strip of glass. be careful not to cut yourself when handling the cut glass. Now figure out the length for your pendant. score your strip to however long your pendant will be and break as before. Now, you should have your base shape.
Assembly:Now you can use other strips and squares of sheet glass cut the same way as before but in different sizes to stack on to your base. Use a bit of glass-tac or elmers glue to help hold them in place. I often like to use frit or confetti sandwiched between two pieces of sheet glass cut to the same size. Both sheets can be clear or the bottom piece can be opaque. whatever your desire is feel free to do. Just remember where the glass touches another piece it will fuse. You may want to clean your piece of glass before you assemble them. This will remove any dust or fingerprints. I just use a soft cloth and windex.
The Kiln: Well, hopefully by now you have enough pieces that you are ready to fire them. Place them on your prepared kiln shelf leaving space in between each one. Each kiln is different. The following instructions work for me but they might now work for you. Check with your kiln instructions or find out from a glass fusing resource a schedule that works for you. Your items will go into the kiln at room temp. I ramp mine up at 10 degrees F per minute so 600 degrees per hour. I find that for me a full fuse is at 1500 degrees and held there for 20-25 minutes. I then have my kiln ramp down at 300 degrees per hour to 950 degrees and I have it soak there for a bit and then cool to room temp.
Annealing: so you might be wondering what is annealing. Annealing is making sure the glass is moved slowly through the brittle zone or temps known to cause thermal shock. If glass is cooled too fast it will crack and break. By allowing it to cool slowly the stress is kept to minimum. That is why I have my kiln slowly cool down to 950 and then allow it to cool to room temp on its own. When I first started fusing I often would come back to a piece weeks later only to find that it had broken and this was due to improper annealing. you can never anneal too long or too slowly. the bigger the piece the more time it will need to be annealed.
Now What?:By now your kiln should be cool and you can remove your pieces. You might find that some of your kiln wash has stuck to the back of your piece. This should wash away easily. At this point you can to decide what to do with them. As I am showing pendants the choices are to drill a hole (something I have never done myself), wire wrap, bezel set, or glue on a bail. The choice is yours. Have fun!

I love shopping but sadly can't do it very often. I went to Portland...Oregon, today. I went shopping for my biz. I stopped at the Pendleton Woolen Mills (in Washougal WA) and got some great fabric. I also went to the Bullseye Glass Resource Center. I love glass. i could have spent a small fortune in there but I was very very good. I stuck to a budget. I got sheet glass, some confetti, and some sizzle stix scraps all for fusing. Plus I got some great new color combos in glass rods for beads.

Rolleiflex Camera for sale Ebay Auction

I finally decided to sell my Rolleiflex camera on ebay. I sadly never even used it. I got it as a trade some years ago from a friend. to the best of my knowledge it does work. It comes with the what I believe is the original leather case. I had always wanted one. You know with digital taking over it harder to find the film and even harder to get the dark room supplies. I'm even going to sell off my enlargers and other darkroom stuffs.

I call these earring Calming Waters. I used these pretty artisan made lampwork glass beads I bought from a local artist. These beads are a pretty teal color with raised dots in light blue. they measure about 8mm by 6mm. I wrapped them with sterling silver wire and added square pale blue Czech glass beads. Getting Clean

Getting clean as in actually you know cleaning my bedroom and office area. I'm not really that messy but like most people any flat surface tends to end up covered in paper and books. Plus I am even dusting. How in the world does dust end up where it does? It has been really invigorating getting things leaned. it's like the room seems brighter and happier. That probably sounds crazy. I think it does seem nicer. I'm hoping this will help me feel inspired to get back into creating new things. i have been in a creativity slump lately.

Greyhound Quilt

One of the things that I try to put my time towards is greyhound adoption. I own a retired racing greyhound. One of the ways i give back to the greyhound community is through donating my time. This is a greyhound theme tee shirt quilt. It will be shipped back to the group that asked me to make it. Being broke sucks

One of the things that really sucks is not being able to splurge and buy things when you want them I am so in love with these shoes. I know I can't afford them and I probably don't even need them. Sometimes, it is nice to dream though.

I decided that in order to make myself blog more I would do a featured item of the week. This is my first week doing this so hopefully I wont be lazy and not have a week two.
This weeks featured item is the Twig Ring. I made it out of .999 Fine Silver precious metal clay. I set in two 4mm round faceted lab grown emeralds and one 4 mm round faceted lab grown alexanderite. This is one of my favorite rings. Each ring ends up being unique and different. This ring is a US size 8. Stop in at my etsy store and check it out.

Procrastination....what can I say I am a master at it. I have had several pieces of jewelry that I have needed to get listed in my etsy store. it has taken me days to finally just do it. I still have to declutter and clean up my studio and my office. Why is it I just keep putting these things off. It isn't as if I am lacking time. I have all the time I could want. I guess it is the ambition and drive to get these things done. The turquoise necklace is one of those items I put off getting listed. I listed it today.

hmm, I could make some hallow promise to do more blog posts but I wont. I would like to make more posting but let's face it I am not the most on top of things person out there. Right at this moment in time I am actually trying to reorganize and clean out my studio. I have some much stuff to sell. Both in product and supplies. Plus I have tons of magazines and books that i have to go through. I honestly don't need all this "stuff". Then once you get out of the studio; I have all the other "stuff" in my closet and bookshelves. I am in a major decluttering mode here.
So far, I have managed to list some ebay auction on already finished jewelry. These are older designs from when I attended retail markets. I have a little bit of everything on ebay right now Plus some designs in my etsy store. Check all that out.

I came home today to find my greyhound playing with fleece fabric squares that I was going to make into simple dog toys. I guess he thought they didn't need stuffing of to make fun sounds. Sadly, my camera was recharging or else I would have a picture of the thief in the act. The best I can do is show him wearing his flannel PJs. Yes, my dog wears jammies.
